Manawatu News August 2011

The Manawatu/Palmerston North branch has monthly meetings the second Monday of every month.  We meet at “The Palms” conference room in Palmerston North.  Our branch region is widespread reaching from  the Wanganui area and Palmerston North  to the Hawkes Bay and includes Army Hygienists at Linton, our geographical reach does cause some difficulty for meeting attendance.  We have a core of supportive regular attendees at our meetings and have welcomed five BOH grads (that we know of) to our area and also had some local Dental Therapists attend CPD meetings. Our small branch  has ongoing involvement with  our assocation with outgoing NZDHA Exec Treasurer Kathleen Brown and incoming  Exec treasurer Kirsten Kirk. Barb Patience was Exec Secretary for many years and also brings a wealth of experience to our Branch (when she’s not sking J).

We have hygienists with many years of experience through to new grads in our area. We aim to provide as much CPD and peer support time as possible for our members.  Some of our monthly meetings have included social/planning evenings and to welcome new members , speakers Dr Nigel Hardy BSc.Chiro : Spinal health and neck and back issues relevant to Dental Practioners, Emily Chiles : Oral hygiene advice for people working with the  disability sector, Rebecca Schipper : Oral health–systemic health relationship: CVD, PTLBW, pulmonary disease, diabetes, Dr Bruce Wilson : Snoring and Sleep apnoea.

We always provide great nibbles/drinks and peer support at our meetings. Coming up in October we have Major Lisa Caulton : Dental Forensics  in Chch and in November Colleen Coulter speaking. We are finishing the year with a social evening in December.  Many of our members attended the  NZDHA conference in Auckland this year.  Our branch also receives invites from the Central Districts Dental Association meetings for any Hygienists who wish to attend their CPD speaker presentations.

We welcome any new members and/or BOH  grads and Therapists who wish to attend our CPD meetings.
